White Sage Smudge Stick
|
|
|
Sage is a purification herb sacred to many Native
American traditions. Use of this herb to cleanse a
space is called "smudging." To smudge a room light
the end of the stick with a match until it flames. In a
moment the flame will reduce to a smoldering. Move
through the room slowly in a clockwise direction
letting the smoke purify the energy. Outline doors and
windows as you come to them, again in a clockwise
motion. Pass favorite objects through the smoke to
cleanse any negative energy. This stick is large
enough to smudge the average house about twice.

Happy Chinese New Year: Year of the
Rat
The usual story we hear about how the
Rat became the first animal of the Chinese Zodiac is
that Buddha, on his deathbed, called the animals to
gather and the Rat ran ahead of the others to become
the first animal. But there are actually several stories
of how the Rat was chosen first, all illustrating
qualities of the Rat. One old Chinese folk tale goes
that the first animal was to be the largest and when
the twelve were measured the Ox was clearly the
largest and it was thought that surely he would take
his place as first animal. However the Rat stood up
and said I am larger than the Ox and I think there
should be a vote by the towns people on who is
larger. People in the crowd snickered to themselves
and the Ox felt bad for the little Rat so the Ox agreed.
Then he saw how dejected and depressed the small
Rat seemed and he felt sorry for him. And when the
Rat suggested that he be given to a bit of time to at
least double his size the Ox readily agreed because
he was the ox and a least a hundred times larger than
Rat. So the Rat gobbled up as much food as he could
find; cheese and meat and vegetables and fruit
followed by lots and lots of cream and milk. And in no
time the Rat was double his size. The day of the vote
came and the Rat and Ox walked through the town to
the meeting. As they went through the town everyone
exclaimed how they had never seen such a large rat
before, "that rat is gigantic!", they said. No one even
bothered to look at the Ox was the same size as any
ox. The Ox had been tricked. The vote was cast in the
Rat won and became first animal of the Zodiac.
The moral of the story: It doesn't matter how
rich you are, how smart you are, how big you are; the
most important thing is how you grow the energy.
